Paper cups in Qatar, by size

Cups are ordered by size rather than by brand, because the size has to match the machine, the lid and the price point. Paper cups in Qatar effectively means three sizes on most accounts. The 6oz is the cortado and karak size and is stocked both as 50 by twenty and under the Al Jatal label. The 7oz ships 1000 to a case and is the standard tea cup for offices, canteens and cafeterias. The 8oz is stocked two ways, with lid and without, which matters more than it sounds: a cafe doing takeaway needs the lid and a canteen doing sit-down does not, and paying for lids you throw away is a quiet cost.

For cold drinks we carry clear juice cups at 12oz and 16oz, 50 by twenty, and here the lids are deliberately sold separately as dome or flat. Dome suits anything with a topping or a straw through it, flat stacks better for delivery. Ordering the cup without confirming the lid is the single most common mistake on a first packaging order.

Plastic cups cover the water and cold side: 6.5oz water cups at 50 by twenty, 200cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc in both clear and white, and small 1oz to 4oz cups for garlic sauce, dips and salad dressing.

Cling film, foil and wrap

The wrap shelf is what a kitchen runs out of first and notices last. Cling film in Qatar is stocked in two widths, 30cm at 1.2kg and 45cm at 1.5kg, both six to a case. The 30cm is for portioning and covering trays through a shift. The 45cm is for pallet-level and large tray work and is usually ordered by the same kitchens taking the 8389 aluminium.

Aluminium foil follows the same two widths, 30cm at 1200g and 45cm, both jumbo rolls six to a case. Between them they cover shawarma wrapping, tray lining and hot holding.

Paper products cover the rest: burger foil paper at 500 pieces by four, printed and plain sandwich paper, burger boxes and snack boxes at 200 pieces, fried chicken buckets at 85oz, paper covers in small and medium at 2kg, and maxi rolls six to a case. Paper plates are stocked at 6 inch and 9 inch, and foam trays in S2 at 500 pieces.

Cutlery, gloves and front of house

Most packaging orders carry a tail of small items that decide whether a delivery is complete. Cutlery is stocked as plastic spoons in big white at 50 by forty and big black at 50 by twenty, and plastic forks at 50 by forty. Straws run as 8mm black, bend, and individually wrapped bend at 500 by twenty, which is the format most hotels now specify.

Gloves are carried as clear large at 100 by 100 packets and vinyl in medium, large and black at 100 by ten. Hair nets are stocked in both black and white at 100s by ten, and aprons as disposable at 100 by ten plus a cloth apron. These are the lines that get missed off an order and then stop a kitchen from passing an inspection.

Front of house is covered by sufra table covers in three sizes, plastic trays and round plates in three diameters, facial tissue, and shopping bags in small, medium and large. Garbage bags are stocked at 65cm by 80cm in two case formats and 90 by 110 at six by twenty.

Ordering packaging without over-ordering

Packaging is the category where kitchens most often tie up cash. Case counts on disposable food containers in Qatar are large by design, so the discipline is to work out weekly usage per line before the first order rather than after the store room fills up.

The approach we would suggest is simple. Count what you actually use in a week for the three or four highest-volume lines, usually the main container, the cup, the cling film and the gloves. Order those to a month of cover. For everything else, take the smallest case format available on the first order and adjust on the second. It is a slower start and a much cheaper store room.
